Promotion Policy
Over the past two years I have been talking to students and parents regarding the necessary quality points for passing each grade level. The Governor's A++ Plan is different from years past. All courses are now scheduled by semesters, like the high schools. Students must earn 2 quality points in each of their core courses (math, language arts, science and geography)per semester, for a total of a minimum of 4 quality points per year, in order to be academically promoted to the next grade. They do not have to pass reading. If students fail a quarter, they are offered ELP for grade enhancement (which gives them 1 quality point.) Florida Virtual is also an option for students to recover quality points, but it is much more labor-intensive and requires Internet access and self motivation. POP is still a
possible option but if they choose that option then they are in the class the entire year, not like in the past when they stayed in the class just until they made up the quality points they were missing.
I explained all this during classroom guidance at the beginning of the year. Transitioning to Middle School has been overwhelming for many student so I am going into the classroom again to explain the promotion policy.
If ELP does not give your child the points necessary then I recommend Florida Virtual (not Hillsborough Virtual) and last the option of POP.
If you have any concerns about your child passing the 6th grade, please call 975-7665 ext. 226.
