"No More Couch Potatoes"
Changing our attitude for a healthy and active lifestyle
Curriculum for 2008-2009
Our goal for this year will be to change the way you think about physical education and have fun while you develop into a "physically educated" student for a healthy and active lifestyle. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children 6-11 years. At present, approximately nine million children over 6 years of age are considered to be overweight.
Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions, including the following:
· Hypertension
· Dyslipidemia (ie, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
· Type 2 diabetes
· Coronary heart disease
· Stroke
· Gallbladder disease
· Osteoarthritis
· Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
· Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)

Our physical education curriculum will follow the fitness/wellness model by incorporating fitness concepts and principles to the activities as well as the cooperative model to develop the ability to solve problems and think critically in a movement setting. Skills and sport education will also be incorporated into daily activities throughout the year. We will include areas in health and nutrition as it relates to our goal in achieving physically fit and active lifestyles for all of our students.
