CALCULATING GPA

A = 4 points    B = 3 points    C = 2 points    D = 1 point     F = 0 points

Example:  A student earns a "C" in mathematics, a "B" in language arts, an "A" in science, a "B" in history, an "A" in PE, and a "B" in orchestra.  He has a total of 19 points (2+3+4+3+4+3 = 19)

GPA = Total quality points divided by number of classes
       = 19/6
       = 3.17

Middle School Progression Plan
As the school year begins, it is important that parents and students are fully aware of the requirements for promotion to the next grade level.  Please take a moment to review the plan with your child.  If you have any questions regarding the pupil progression plan or your child’s individual progress toward promotion, please contact his or her guidance counselor at 975-7665.

(Excerpted from School District of Hillsborough County K-Adult Student Progression Plan Revised 11/20/07) The complete School District of Hillsborough County K-Adult Student Progression Plan is available for viewing or download at www.sdhc.k12.fl.us).

Promotion will occur when a student demonstrates acceptable skill proficiency in specified subject areas and demonstrates mastery of District Benchmarks as specified in the School District of Hillsborough County Revised Graduation Standards and Benchmarks as approved by the Board. Sunshine State Standards are incorporated into appropriate courses in all subject areas in Grades 6-8. (Legal Reference: FS 1008.25).
*Sixth grade students must pass language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies to be promoted to seventh grade.
*Seventh grade students must pass language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies to be promoted to eighth grade.
*Students in Grade 8 must demonstrate mastery of District Benchmarks to be promoted to high school. Students who do not attain the Benchmarks will be retained. Exceptions may be made using the School Placement Committee Procedures and must be in compliance with current state statutes relating to acceptable levels of performance on FCAT for Grade 8 students. Frequent monitoring of student academic progress will occur to ascertain current levels of Benchmark performance.

*Students who are retained must receive remediation or be enrolled in an intensive program that is different from the previous year’s program. Only in exceptional cases will a student be assigned to any one grade more than two consecutive years. (Legal Reference: FS 1008.25)
A student will pass an annual course when four (4) quality points are earned.  A student will pass a semester course when two (2) quality points are earned.
*In order to “pass” a subject as stated above, students must earn four quality points in that subject.  Quality points as assigned to final 9-week report card grades as follows:
A = 4 points    B = 3 points    C = 2 points    D = 1 point     F = 0 points
Example:  A student earns a “C” in mathematics the first 9-weeks, a “B” in the second 9-weeks, and an “A” in the third and fourth 9-weeks.  He has a total of 13 points (2+3+4+4 = 13) for that subject.  Thus, he passed that subject for the school year.

Middle School students enrolled in a high school credit-earning course must earn a minimum “C” average per semester to remain in the class and receive high school credit. (Legal Reference: FS 1008.25).  Middle School students enrolled in a high school credit-earning course may use grade enhancement to replace a grade of “C” or below.
